Background

This specialty retailer operated a brick-and-mortar store near SouthPark Mall in Strongsville and had launched a Shopify store 8 months prior to engaging our services. The product catalog included over 200 SKUs across multiple categories. The owner had invested $6,000 in the initial Shopify setup, expecting that having an online store would automatically generate sales. After 8 months, online revenue averaged $2,800 per month, far below the $10,000 monthly target needed to justify the inventory investment and shipping infrastructure.

The Challenge

A technical audit revealed why the Shopify store was underperforming. Of 200+ products, only 47 pages were indexed by Google. The remaining products used manufacturer-provided descriptions (duplicate content that Google ignores), had no product schema markup, and many were orphaned from the navigation (no internal links pointing to them). Collection pages created duplicate content issues: the same product appeared on multiple collection pages with identical URLs and descriptions. Site speed was 3.9 seconds due to an unoptimized theme with excessive app scripts. The Google Merchant Center account was not connected, meaning zero Google Shopping visibility.

Our Strategy

We designed a comprehensive ecommerce SEO strategy covering technical fixes, content optimization, Google Shopping integration, and a supporting blog content program. The technical foundation came first: fixing the duplicate content from collections, implementing proper canonical tags, adding product schema to every page, and optimizing the theme for speed. Product page optimization focused on rewriting descriptions for the top 100 products by revenue potential, with unique, keyword-targeted copy replacing the manufacturer descriptions.

Key Actions

  • Product page optimization with unique descriptions and product schema
  • Collection page restructuring to eliminate duplicate content
  • Google Shopping feed optimization and campaign launch
  • Blog content targeting buyer-intent keywords

Execution

Months 1 to 2 focused on technical SEO: theme speed optimization (3.9s to 1.8s), canonical tag implementation across all collection pages, product schema markup via a custom Liquid snippet, and Google Merchant Center configuration. Months 3 to 6 focused on product page optimization: unique descriptions for the top 100 products, optimized title tags and meta descriptions targeting buyer-intent keywords, alt text for all product images, and internal linking between related products. We also restructured the collection pages with unique category descriptions and FAQ content. Months 4 to 10 added blog content (2 articles per month targeting informational keywords related to the product categories) and Google Shopping campaigns. The Shopping campaigns started with the top 50 products by margin and expanded as data revealed which products converted best.

Results

Indexed product pages grew from 47 to 198 as Google discovered and valued the newly unique content. Organic traffic to product pages increased from 420 to 3,100 monthly visits. Monthly organic sales grew from $2,800 to $12,300, a 340% increase. Google Shopping added an additional $4,200 in monthly revenue. Combined online revenue reached $16,500 per month, exceeding the original $10,000 target by 65%. The highest-performing product page ranked #1 for its primary keyword and generated $1,800 in monthly sales alone.

"We built the Shopify store thinking customers would just find us. They did not. Once the SEO and Shopping campaigns kicked in, online revenue went from supplemental to our primary growth channel."

Key Takeaway

Shopify's default SEO capabilities are limited. Duplicate content from collections, missing schema markup, and manufacturer descriptions create a technical ceiling that prevents products from ranking. Cleveland retailers who invest in Shopify-specific SEO (unique descriptions, proper schema, speed optimization, and Google Shopping integration) unlock organic product visibility that template-based competitors cannot achieve.
